Grand Haven, MI is widely known to be the first city to be designated as Coast Guard City, USA by an act of Congress – receiving the honor in November of 1998. The city is popularly known for it’s lighthouse and is a popular destination for tourists looking for a french-colonial style getaway. Grand Haven Lighthouse and Pier – Grand Haven developed as a logging, lumber mill, shipping town and shipbuilding center during the mid-to-late 19th century, prompting the building of the Grand Haven Lighthouses connected by a lighted “catwalk” above the pier. The outer lighthouse was built in 1875 and the inner lighthouse was built in 1905. It remains a popular tourist attraction.
