Inspiration for Your Home Office

Remote work is here to stay, and businesses know it. The Harvard Business Review (August 2023) reported that executives expect the demand for home office space to remain strong. Fortune.com also reported that Smucker’s is fully embracing remote work.

Whether you’re converting a small nook, renovating a spare bedroom, or creating a dedicated workspace in a larger room, we have a variety of home office inspiration for you.

Here are the top three home offices from this year’s International Dream Room Competition, judged by more than 30 interior design journalists from across the US and Canada:

The first-place space, designed by sisters Barbara Elliott and Jennifer Ward Woods of Atlanta, was a transformation of a guest bedroom into a gentleman’s casual home office with a masculine feel.

Soft ivory tones gently interplay with bold black walls and well-appointed bookshelves bathed in light. Each shelf is adorned with artisan-crafted accessories made with organic stones from Europe, creating versatile accent pieces that can be mixed and matched with a variety of interior styles. The overall effect is one of casual sophistication, with a timeless appeal.

The Second-place home office was designed by Kam Popovecz of Rochester Hills, Mich., a first-time participant in Dream Room. It is a dramatic colorful change from the previous homeowners’ dark brown.

The client fell in love with the Garden Party mural at first sight. Bold green velvet chairs with a touch of gold add glam to the space. To further dazzle the room and provide storage, the designer added two dreamy white credenzas with soft golden champagne geometric overlays. This home office is vibrant, playful, and feminine, proving that home offices can be more than just functional spaces.

The third-place selection in the Home Office Category of this year’s International Dream Room Competition is a multi-use room designed by Kiran Arif of Cincinnati. Arif has been in business for less than three years, but her work is clearly impressive.

A Sputnik light fixture brightens the windowless space and adds sophistication with its unique design. Modern metal and glass barn doors separate the office from the rest of the room while still allowing plenty of light to enter.

If you only have a small niche to work with, you can create a cozy office space like the one shown below left. If you need to provide for sleeping, there are options like the chair shown below right.

If your home office is also right there as you enter the home, consider making it a fabulous décor statement (below left). If books and music are your thing, incorporate them, of course.
